Breaking the Taboos around Menstrual Hygiene in Nawandala SS, Iganga district

With support from the GLOBUS Project, EADEN, in partnership with Caritas Uganda, has taken a bold step towards empowering the girl child by promoting menstrual hygiene management at Nawandala Senior Secondary School.

As part of this initiative, the partners provided waste bins for the proper disposal of sanitary pads, creating a cleaner and safer environment for girls at school. This simple but impactful intervention aims to break the silence and taboos surrounding menstruation while ensuring that girls can attend school with confidence and dignity.

For many girls, managing menstruation remains a challenge due to limited access to sanitary facilities, inadequate knowledge, and social stigma. The support from GLOBUS, EADEN, and Caritas Uganda addresses these barriers by fostering awareness, hygiene, and open dialogue about menstrual health- key factors in reducing absenteeism and dropout rates among girls.

Through this effort, Nawandala SS is becoming a model school for inclusive and supportive learning environments where every girl has the opportunity to thrive. By keeping girls in school, the initiative is not only promoting education but also building stronger, healthier, and more equitable communities.
