Caritas Denmark, Caritas Uganda and EADEN, visited Nawandala Cooperative to witness how donor support is transforming rural livelihoods and strengthening sustainability in Eastern Uganda.
On 3rd September 2025, a donor monitoring team from Caritas Denmark visited Nawandala Cooperative in Iganga District to assess the impact of their support, review the cooperative’s achievements, and explore its prospects for sustainability. The delegation was led by Cecilie Winther, Head of the International Department, and Asante Samuel, Financial Controller, accompanied by representatives from Caritas Uganda and the Eastern Archdiocesan Development Network (EADEN) management team.
The visit aimed to observe the tangible results of donor funding and to learn how the cooperative is positioning itself for long-term growth. Nawandala Cooperative showcased several key achievements, including the establishment of a bulking store, and the development of strong lobbying and advocacy skills that have enabled them to secure a grinding mill, tractor, and bakery from the Government of Uganda. Members have also benefited from capacity building in sustainable agricultural practices and agroecology, which has improved farm productivity and resilience to climate change.
During discussions, cooperative leaders also highlighted ongoing challenges such as theft, high electricity costs, limited capital, and changing climatic conditions that affect production. However, the cooperative remains committed to expanding its membership base, strengthening financial management, and promoting collective marketing to enhance sustainability.
Speaking during the visit, Cecilie Winther commended the cooperative’s resilience and progress, noting that the team was impressed by how donor support has translated into practical community benefits. The visit reaffirmed the strong partnership between Caritas Denmark, Caritas Uganda, and EADEN in empowering farmer cooperatives to achieve sustainable livelihoods and economic growth across Eastern Uganda.
